Hi,
My friend received a scholarship for attending a conference recently. The scholarship board had paid for her stay, travel and other expenses during the conference. In order to claim the scholarship amount, she is required to submit a W-8BEN form. She is on her F-1 (Student) visa.
In the Part II of the W-8 form, she is required to mention the "Claim of Tax Treaty Benefits". She is a citizen of India and hence she is eligible for an Article 21 Tax Treaty as identified on Article 21. But the scholarship that she received does not cover anything related to her education (i.e. tuition fees, etc.).
Hence, for this scholarship, is she eligible for any Income tax treaty? If yes, what is the Article and the percentage of withholding that she needs to mention?
Thank you!
