    if the employer is providing you proper offer letter , your university accepts this employment as CPT and edits your i20 accordingly , you can get a SSN .

        not required to be paid ...u can still get ur SSN if u hve offer letter and college approve ur CPT

            I think I agree with what punit said above! To get an SS#, you don't have to prove whether you're getting paid or not, but you sure need a letter and university permission to apply for it! At SS office all they ask you is a letter from your university/ips/local immi. Agency who authorized you to work. I hope that helped! Good luck

              @kiran: I think my employer didn't put a pay rate but I vaguely recall that the cpt application asked me to check a box if this is a paid thing!

                Yes, you can get SSN even if its unpaid job. I got my SSN on unpaid internship (on campus). I took offer letter, the ISA approval for SSN and new I20 ( with CPT) . Hope this helps

                  Remember, an SSN is for eligibilty to work. Lots of US citizens wouldn't get a SSN if you had to have a paid job to get one.
