  • problem in SSN because of larger name

    Hello All,

I am pursuing my Masters in USA(california). I applied to SSN 45 days back and was told i have problem in my name. As a typical south Indian, i have very large first name which has 24 letters and the system in SSN office is taking just 20 characters. Because of this my name is truncated and only part of name is being accepted. Now, passport ,i 20 has full 24 letter name whereas i94 and SSN applicaton has truncated name because of space constraint. I was told to go to immigration office to explain my problem by SSN office employee. He also told me to hire a legal lawyer to explain my problem to court.

Now as a student how can i hire a lawyer and spend 1000's of dollars. Is this my mistake to have a larger name? Also college is not paying me money as i dont have SSN. This is so ridiculous and i am really feeling frustrated in this country. Can you please suggest me what should i do so that i can come out of this problem? is it true that i have to hire a lawyer? when classes start how can 1 travel 45kms(Fullerton to Los Angeles) whenever they call me for court hearing. It would be of great help if some one with the same problem suggests me solution.

    Thanks,
    Sandy

                    Dude, don't worry.
Just ask them to place your name till where ever it is possible. Even I have 24 characters in my name. Starting from the first they placed how many they can. It is not a big deal.

No big deal. Had/have same problem. Have your name how much ever they can fit.

Even i have the same name problem.. i think you can use one of your first name as your middle name. This is how my issue was resolved..

hello all..I posted this question..Thanks all for your valuable replies. But the employee in SSN office said that i have to talk to immigration and then hire a lawyer to explain my situation to court. So i took appointment for immigration for this friday. So do u suggest me to go to immigration or reapply SSN from different branch of SSN office?please suggest. Thanks in advance
