  • Expiring OPT and DL. DMV refusing to acknowledge new I20

My OPT is valid till June 23 2014 and so is my Virginia driver's license. I moved to Illinois 2 months ago and had applied for H1B and got a receipt number.

I contacted my DSO and they sent me an I-20 with an extension till September 30. But the DMV in Pekin, IL is refusing to acknowledge the I-20.

They want to see a document showing at least 6 months. I have not applied for OPT extension and my H1B is still under initial review.

Please give me some advice on how to proceed.

This is usually common in all the states. I don't know if DMV would agree but there is a provision of secondary check where USCIS verifies your legal presence in the country and with that temporary extension of the license is possible. You need to check with the DMV in your state.

You can always request for SAVE verification through your state DMV office and the USCIS will do the background secondary verification and can provide you with a letter which you can take it back to DMV for the temporary extension of your license.

Better wait for your H1B approval copy or else get it renewed in VA
