  • Can unpaid RA (Research Assistantship) be considered as OPT employment?

I am currently on OPT and working as a Research Assistant at a university. Right now the RA is full time and paid. But there is a possibility that there may be a break in the contract due to lack of funding. I do not want to add any days to the 90 day unemployment period. If I sign a contract as an unpaid RA (20+ hours per week) till the funding resumes, does it still qualify as employment for OPT?

hello, how did you find the paid RA position under such a bad funding envirionment? and, you posted this post in June last year, how are you now? did you face some problem in stem opt application? Do you plan to use opt to deepen some research background to apply for a phd program?

It does not have to be paid for first year of OPT; however, if it's the extension period I think it has to be paid. Correct me experts if I am wrong about the extension part.
