  • Is SSN card necessary to receive employment letter?

    Hi,

I recently got my OPT card and a company has offered me job.The company is yet to give me the offer letter. Is it necessary to have SSN before joining the company? (to get the employment letter from them). Because I was under the assumption that if I have a job then I'm eligible for applying for SSN ( by producing the OPT card and offer letter for SSN) OR is it like go to SSN office with my OPT card and I-20 and apply for it, and then ask my employer to give me the offer letter ? can anyone please explain me the correct procedure for applying for SSN.
P.S. I didn't have SSN when I was a student as I was in a different visa status. Currently I'm on F-1 and have my OPT card with me.

Without any offer letter, it is not good way of applying for opt.

Anywayz, As you got the OPT card, now you can use your opt card and the offer letter and address proof to apply for the ssn card

You are eligible to work, only, if you applied for ssn and you have a receipt for that.

You can apply for SSN after starting. You can also ask your employer to wait for a week or two after joining.. Paycheck is also generated using any other SSN ( Company's can do that, but u can join w/o SSN). Not to worry... I did this !!!!!

You just have to show your opt card and passport. You can apply for SSN only after the start date in your opt card. You can show your receipt and start working even before getting the SSN card. You will be paid only after you get your SSN

Once you get a job offer letter. Ask for recommendation and approval letter form your college, and simple go to local SSN office and apply. It gets delivered to your address within 7 days.

You just need I-20, OPT card, Passport and any ID proof to apply for SSN. Sometimes they don't even look at ID. You need not to have offer letter. That's what happened for all of us.

I am an F-1 student on OPT and I took a passport, printout of my arrival and departure record, the OPT I-20 and EAD card to the office – I didn’t have to have an offer letter (I am at USC). Here is information from my school - the information should apply to other international students too http://sait.usc.edu/ois/ssn/how-to-apply.aspx
