  • Applying for OPT extension without degree

    Hi,

I did my PhD defense on October 26th, and I submit all the requirements by the deadline to get the degree. I don't know what happened in our graduate school, but it seems that some of the documents are missing now and they are not able to certify my degree this semester (I don't want to go into the details that what happened, but it wasn't my fault) So, now they will give my degree next semester in May. My OPT will expire in Jun. 15th and I need to apply for the extension before. Our grad school may give me a proof of completion but it is not a degree. Is that enough for applying for the OPT extension? Has anyone experienced the same thing?

    I would appreciate any comments,
    Best,
    Hedi

Technically, yes, you should get the extension. This will be an extension and contingent on the same eligibility conditions as the original OPT, which you can get with a pending dissertation. But you never know.

As long as the letter states that you have completed your degree requirements and are set to graduate, that should be sufficient.
