  • Bit of a complicated situation

Greetings. I have made the mistake of getting a degree in a totally useless field; Psychology. I will be graduating soon and I can't help but wonder how on earth can I possibly relate this to any job I can get. I have about 3 years of experience as a Resident Advisor, and could probably land a full-time Hall Director job at some university. I was also looking at other positions like "international student advisor" or "admissions advisor" that I would qualify for. Could I argue that I intend to get a master's degree in Student Affairs after my OPT and that I just wanted to get some work experience before grad school?

The truth is that I will be getting married to my fiancé, who is a US citizen, in about a year. (He still has another year before he graduates) Hence, I just need the OPT to make a living and remain in the US until we marry. It's not exactly looking good, and we want to avoid marrying before he graduates because of financial aid reasons. If all else fails, I will have to go back to Belgium, wait for a year and come back on a K-1 visa - however this would mean a year of separation so we would rather not do this...

Not sure what your question is here. If your degree qualifies you for the job, take the job and work on OPT for one year. Even 20 hours a week job will keep you in status.
