  • OPT Ending - Are my options good enough?

Hi - My OPT ends in Feb 2017 and extending it is out of the question (different field of work). I'm planning to enroll as a student again. My best option is to get a 2nd master's (in IT) and work on CPT from Day 1 as I have a consultant job. I'm looking for the cheapest means to extend my stay till my employer applies for my visa in April 2017.

    My questions are:
    1. Do I qualify for cap-gap? Should I enroll in a university at all?
    2. Can I join a community college and get a Associate's degree?
    3. The universities offering Day 1 CPT in New Jersey?
    4. Any better options?

    Thanks!

I couldnt find a school in NJ but found one in Michigan that offers Day 1 CPT. Maybe you could do online along with COT and get credit for working? I don't think any community college offers a masters but a 2nd masters until H1B is an option.

You do not qualify for Cap gap. Harrisburg is good university.

                1. No and your choice.
                2. Yes.
                3. Somebody already answered this.

                  1. You qualify for Cap Gap, but you will not be able to work after February. You will only be allowed to stay in the U.S. in F-1 status.
                  2. Technically, you can.
                  3. Beware of institutions offering Day 1 CPT. USCIS will examine the program closely when filing the H-1B to see if the CPT is legitimate (truly a required part of the curriculum). If they are not satisfied, they will deny the Change of Status.
                  4. Find another job that allows you to extend your STEM OPT. You have 3 months to go. You can even do part-time work.
