  • Can I re-register to graduate when on OPT and working?

    Hi,

I received my OPT on September 8th and defended my thesis on September 16th. I had a job offer and started working on October 3rd. I have not submitted my ETD yet as my thesis is undergoing major revisions. I am hoping to turn it in before graduation date of December 7th so I can still graduate this semester.

I was curious if I cannot finish revising my thesis this semester can I still register for a single credit hour in the spring semester (while I am still working) to finish my thesis and submit ETD? Am I allowed to do this? I took one credit hour this semester saying that I will graduate in December but that seems unlikely. Will I loose my OPT (which is valid till Aug 31st, 2017) if I register again in my university to finish graduating? Please advice.

    Thanks,
    TM

Hi you can complete the thesis coming spring while working. I think when you apply for your OPT extension you need to have degree in hand.

The OPT rules allow you to work on OPT while your Thesis is pending. However, there is no need to register for a class in this scenario. You should speak with your student advisor.
