OPT Travel

Hi,
I have a quick question on my travel on OPT period. I haven't applied for extension yet and My OPT is valid till march 15th, Im traveling India, this December 25th 2016-jan18th 2017. Do I have to apply for extension before traveling or is it ok to apply after coming from India?
I have all the valid doc's to present on port of entry. Please respond

Apply after coming back. It's not advisable to leave the US with Amy kind of pending applications.
