  • Opt stem extension issue

    Hello all,

I’m in a very tough position regarding OPT-Extension

I am an international student graduated from XXXX University - Atlanta, GA in Dec 2015. I was issued an OPT I-20 with CIPP code 11.0103 upon graduation which happens to fall under STEM approved CIPP codes ( Attached the list for reference). My OPT started on 15 Jan 2016 and will be expiring on 14 Jan 2017. After completion of 9 months of my OPT, I received an information saying that my DSO is denying to issue an I20 for OPT extension with same CIPP code (11.0103). Whereas, students who graduated in Aug *2015 were issued I-20 for OPT extension with the same CIPP code (11.0103) issued initially. They applied for extension and USCIS approved their extension too.*

My concern is that being a student who took same course, paid same fee and received same I-20 for initial OPT application is now being denied to issue an I-20 for OPT extension with 11.0103 CIPP code. On the flip side my DSO is ready to issue an I-20 with a CIPP code 52.0299 which does not fall under STEM approved codes. Applying for an extension with this code does not make any sense as it would not be considered by USCIS officials in first place. Can anyone help out with this situation ?? Can I approach attorney ??

It is the concern of all the students of my batch and upcoming batches too.

If you took more business courses and less IT courses then there are chances they won't give I-20 for IT degree. Talk to your DSO and get more details from them.

Your cipp code from initial 12 month opt i20 and extension i20 should match. So if they issue an extension i20 with a different cipp than current i20, it wont work anyway. Cipp code also depends on concentration and not just MS. Talk to ur dso to get more information and options.

If you started your program with a I20 of CIPP code (11.0103) then that should remain same throughout your OPT.
It seems unfair to change the code on I20 in during OPT and issuing new code on new I20.
You should have mentioned exact reason that why DSO is changing the code.
If you don't get any satisfactory answer from the DSO then definitely you can consult an attorney.

It looks like School ISS is trying to fix huge error. Just talk to attorney,

What’s your degree code as listed on your initial I-20’s before OPT? Do they all match?
