Volunteering while on OPT STEM extension

Hi,
I am currently doing volunteer work in my regular OPT. When I apply for STEM extension, do I need to have a paid position already for extension period? What if I only get paid position after the deadline for applying for STEM extension has passed but I am still on the regular OPT?

Unpaid work is allowed during OPT (Not during STEM Extension). Make sure you are clearly documenting the work you are doing and that the professor will give a detailed letter explaining your work.
As long as the paid work is set to start on or before your STEM OPT start date, you should be fine. You should have a clear offer letter that shows the start date is on or before the STEM OPT start date.
