  • Unpaid volunteering work under OPT for professor

I am working under my university professor as an unpaid volunteer. I have informed the DSO of the same on the first day of my OPT starting. It is now 4 months since my OPT started and I am starting to worry if my OPT extension application will be denied for doing volunteer work. I plan to get a full time before applying for OPT STEM extension. The volunteer work is with the professor in my own engineering department.
    I have the following questions:

    1) Is anybody getting denied for STEM OPT extension because they worked as unpaid volunteer during their regular post-completion OPT? (I have heard cases of this during 2013 for Nebraska Service Center, but any recent ones?)
    2) Last month I moved to a different city in other state for job search. My work with the professor is software so I am working remotely now. Is this ok to do? I am worried because in my university town job prospects are not good and now I am scared about violating laws because I moved to other state while working remotely.

Unpaid work is still allowed during OPT (Not during STEM Extension). Make sure you are clearly documenting the work you are doing and that the professor will give a detailed letter explaining your work. When you find another job, get the verification letter from the professor (on the university letterhead) confirming the dates you worked for the professor and your job duties BEFORE you leave. You want to get it then so that if USCIS later requests it when you apply for the STEM extension, you don’t have to worry about tracking down the professor.
