Can we apply OPT Extension before 90 days

My OPT extension start date will be Jan 5th 2017. So people say I should start applying after Oct 5th 2016. What will happen if I apply in advance may be by this month ending i.e., on 30th Sept 2016 which will be before 90 days? Will there be any problem if I do this way?

USCIS will reject or deny the application for being filed too early. By the time you hear back from USCIS about the denial or rejection, it might be too late to apply.

Also, October 5 is not the date you need to apply. The application cannot be filed more than 90 days (https://www.uscis.gov/working-united...yment/stem-opt) before the end of your OPT. Count the days or use a date calculator to figure out the actual date.

As per as my understanding I came to know we can apply in advance of 90 days but not more than 120 days. https://siss.ucdavis.edu/students/employment/STEM.html

There is no rule that you should apply within 90 days. If your university is ready to give you the extension I20, you are good to apply.

Nope, there is a rule which says you should apply within 90 days, see below and refer to the link as well.

Submit the Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization up to 90 days before your current OPT employment authorization expires, and within 60 days of the date your designated school official (DSO) enters the recommendation for OPT into your Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) record.

Interested to know what happened in your case? Did you end up applying earlier than 90 days? I'm in a similar situation so I'm interested to know the outcome.
