  • Opt ending and the timeline for Masters Degree

I did my undergrads in the US and my opt is ending in December. I didn't get the H1-B lottery and I'm planning to do my Masters for Spring 2017. My main question is what should be my timeline to do things ?

    1. Can I stay in the US after my OPT expiry date ? I won't be hunted down and put on a plane, would I ?
    2. Spring 2017 usually starts from February, do I need an acceptance letter before the end of my OPT or can I take my time to apply and prepare for it ?
    3. Is there a possibility that I don't need to go to India to get my Visa stamped ? Can we do it in US ?

Has anyone else gone through the same situation ? I've OPT validity for 100 days and couldn't apply for the new extension due to a miscommunication from my school, I'm freaking out. Appreciate all and any answers. Thanking everyone in advance.

you have 60 days after your opt expiration to request for I-20 transfer to a new program, in the meanwhile you can stay here in US.

          1. You can stay in US after OPT expiration but u have only 60 days as grace period within which either you take admission in a different course or transfer to a different school and become a student again.
          2. You can't take as long as you want. You would have only 60 days.
          3. If your visa has expired, you can still live in the US legally with a valid I20. However if you were to travel outside US, you would need a valid visa to re-enter the country. You cannot renew f1 in US.

To add to that.. Have your sevis transfered from your old school to the new. Your new school would give you a transfer request form that your old school DSO needs to sign. Spring usually starts from Jan, so you have more than enough time to start this process. And if you have a valid visa from your old school, you don't need a new one to go to a new school.

You have 60 days of grace period after your OPT is complete. As long as you are accepted and registered for classes and your new I-20 validity date is within 30 days of the end of your grace period, you will remain in F-1 status. There will be no need to go for re-stamping or anything like that.
Spring semester usually starts from January, not February, for most schools that follow the 2-semester model. If you plan to start in the Spring semester, you better get going on applying to schools NOW.
