Did you join a consultancy and update their details in your university within 90 days of your opt start date ? If so, don't worry, you are fine because it is not necessary that you have to be on a payroll during the 12 month opt period. However, if you did not do so you might get into trouble for not having a job under 90 days of opt start in the first place and not payroll. Hurry and talk to dso.

Regardless of when you got the job..have u updated a certain joining date using a consultancy before the 90 days..if you did then there is no issue ...u can work without pay for the first 12months.
If it exceeded the 90 days without any joining date at least from a consultant then it's an issue, anyway there is always a way out. Talk to your school as they are the best persons to help you out rather than posting here and getting confused..gl!!
