  • OPT request date entered wrong on I-20

    Hi All,

I received my new updated 24 months I-20 from college, It shows STEM request dates from 06/15/2016 to 06/15/2018. The correct one should be a day before that is 06/14/2018. Is this is a small issue ? Can i submit the following I-20 to USCIS ?

    And Question - 2

On my new I-20 it shows that i have started working with my new employer from STEM start date that is 06/15/2016 but in the offer letter i have submitted it shows the joining date from 07/01/2016. Can this be considered as an serious issue ?

I will answer your questions in 2 bullets.

    1. Please request the university to change the OPT end date, this is not a small issue but the university can make the change easily in SEVIS and provide you with the I-20.

    2. The rule is that when you are employed while on an OPT and requesting an extension, considering the STEM extension universities normally put the start date as the date from the OPT STEM Extension start date ( this was done in your case I believe) but If your start date is specifically on 07/01/2016 please request your university to put the actual start date in the employment section.

These are minor things that can be changed and should not be an issue at all.

I am not sure which University you are from. But this is happening with our University too. Even I had the similar situation and checked with our DSO. They have confirmed that is by default given by USCIS and they are not altering anything. You can take the email confirmation from your DSO and apply for your extension.

same for me 06/18 to 06/18.. My DSO told me that's how SEVIS generates ..I don't think it is an issue... And also DSO said tat they just enter the start date & the SEVIS automatically generates the end date.. in my initial opt the request dates were different & I got the card with the end date by a day off.

I changed my employer and my start date with my new employer was on July the 1st, but the I-20 generated by the DSO has the start date as July the 9th I.e the day after my opt expires. She generated a new I-20 today and asked me to mail them the new I-20 if I get a query. Will there be a opt extension denial due to these dates confusion?

new 24 month i20 will have the start date of employer next day after ur opt expiry date..irrespective of ur employer actual start date..so the i20 wch u sent is absolutely fine I guess..
