Can OPT Stem extension be unpaid

Hi,

I am currently on 17 month OPT extension and was laid off recently. Since I am working through a staffing firm, I am not planning on applying for 24 month extension. I have recently received a job offer from a company but for an 6 month unpaid internship. Is it legal for me to work as an unpaid intern while I am on my 17 month OPT extension?

You cannot work as an unpaid intern during the OPT extension period.

Hi, I am facing a similar situation. My STEM OPT is valid until June 2017. I am currently employed through a staffing agency in a company and my contract was suddenly terminated. I have about one month left on my OPT unemployment days. I had asked my company to keep me on payroll for a month atleast and they had agreed to do so but they wouldn't pay me at that time. Is being on payroll enough to save my unemployment days on STEM OPT? Is unpaid / on pay roll the same thing ? I would appreciate any response. TIA
