  • Laid off while STEM Extension in process

I got laid off 1 month after I applied for my STEM Extension. My case status says that the case has been received now for over a month now. My past employer said that I am still on their payroll because of the severance package but not as an active employee. My student adviser says she is not sure either what happens to my STEM Extension now.
Before being laid off I had been unemployed only for 5 days, so I have many days left on my unemployed days but my current OPT extends on 25th of May if my extension is not approved.
Can anyone tell what would happen to my stem extension application

Get a new job with an E-Verify employer immediately - even part-time if you have to. If you’re not employed by an E-verify employer and USCIS realizes this, they can deny the OPT extension. Hopefully, if they realize you lost the job, they will most likely send a Request for Evidence for information regarding the new employer. This will give you some time to find the employer. Act fast!
