Laid off while on OPT

Hi my OPT started in August 2015 and I started my job in September 2015 with initial period of unemployment of 30 days. I recently got laid off from my company , and it has been around 15 days bringing total unemployment period to 45 days. I am looking for a job, but I am worried about being out of status. I am a MS in CS grad. My friends told me that only the initial unemployment period counts and not the period after getting laid off. Also does the 90 day unemployment period is just for OPT or does it include STEM extension as well ? Any suggestions regarding maintaining my F1 status will be much appreciated.

All unemployment time is counted, including after lay off. You should not accrue more than 90 days of unemployment. Once you get the STEM Extension, the total unemployment days you can have increases to 120.

Easy, the 90day unemployment period accounts to your first 1 year OPT visa. Being said that, if you have utilized 20 days of your unemployment period, you will have remaining 70 days which will remain in good shape till the end of 365th day. Stem extension has 30day unemployment period I assume, but I am not 100 % positive.

Not to mention, if you're afraid of eating up your unemployment days, start volunteering till you find a job. Ask your DSO on what counts as employment and go for it. All the best.
