Can we apply for opt stem extension with research work pending?

Hello,

I'm on my F1 visa, working on OPT in my field of Masters Degree. I have completed all the course work and obtained OPT last year and immediately got a job and started working.
But I still need to defend my thesis. My Professor is on vacation this semester and my work got delayed. Initial 12 month OPT is expiring soon and I need to apply for extension.
Can I go ahead and apply for OPT stem extension without defending my thesis. Or do I definitely need to complete my Master's thesis defense to get my OPT extension? I couldn't get any information on this anywhere.
Please help me guys.
