  • Losing job during OPT

    Hello all,

I'm currently on my OPT and losing my job as my position is being eliminated because of internal organizational changes. I'm currently interviewing with a few companies but I'm not sure if I'd be able to start there right after my end date at the current position. So my question is, how many days can I stay unemployed during OPT? I used only 2 weeks of the 3-month job search time after I graduated so do I have another 2 months and 2 weeks left to find a new job or is there any other rule?

Also, do I need to update my university about this unemployed time? Or should I update them after I get the new job?

Thank you for your help in advance!

You have 2 months and 2 weeks to find a job.
You should notify your school DSO as soon as you lose your job. There is no point hiding information as this causes issues later on and you might get RFE when you apply for status.

You can have up to 90 days of unemployment. Don’t count months or weeks, but count the days to get an exact count. You are supposed to inform the DSO.
