Starting Employment on OPT without SSN

Hi,

I will be starting my first job in OPT. I don't have an SSN yet. I cant apply before joining as I am out of the country and the latest I can apply is after the first day oron the first day of employment. Will my employer agree and is it mandatory to have an SSN before joining any organization. Please help.
