  • Opt approved but not graduated

    Hello,

I applied for OPT as I was hoping to graduate in Summer,2015 but due to a family emergency I had to extend my course of study till Fall,2015. I am only left with the Graduate research in my masters program and now my OPT status is approved and the card is being produced and I am yet to complete my course.

Please help me with this situation and guide me with any options.

    Thank you.

if ur opt is approved, it cannot be cancelled or postponed or cannot be paused. you are better off using it now. If you are left with thesis only, find a job and start working.

See if the information here helps: http://www.ice.gov/doclib/sevis/pdf/...nce_042010.pdf.

In order to maintain OPT and not accrue any time for unemployment, you need to make sure you are working at least 20 hours a week. You can’t accrue more than 90 days of unemployment.

You need to find out from your advisor if Graduate Research is like regular classes or a preparation for thesis. According to the guidance, if all you have left is thesis to graduate, you can work full-time and work on your thesis. If Graduate Research is treated like being in school full-time, you can’t work more than 20 hours a week.
