  • Lost Passport : Process of reapplying in OPT period

I lost my passport which has F1 VISA in it. Now I will be in OPT status soon. I was issued a new passport. Now, what is the process for reapplying for VISA during my OPT period? I went through http://travel.state.gov/content/visa...documents.html link and it says I can go for Abroad and reapply for lost VISA. Is Canada eligible for this kind of issues for reapplying? PS : I do not have Canada VISA. Can I Still enter Canada?

Any suggestions and help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

You will need to go abroad to file for an F-1 visa. While Canada is usually a viable option, there’s always a chance that the U.S. consulate there will say that they are unable to assess your ties to your home country and will have you go back to your home country anyway.

Also, generally speaking, it is harder to get an F-1 visa once you have entered your OPT period (your ties to your home country and intent to return are now harder to prove because you have decided to stay and work in the U.S.).

Remember, if you don’t need to travel, you don’t need the visa.

Hi. Thank you so much for your kind reply.

If I have a job offer and in start working for an employer and later if I go to my home country for vacation and then go for VISA stamping in my home country will that process be smooth and will the probability of getting my VISA stamping done is more?

If my H1B gets picked by then, Can I go directly to my home country to get my H1B stamping done smoothly at that time?

As of now I do not have any travel emergency. But I am just making sure as a reference to plan for future travel.

          Thanks in advance

              Hi Raghu,

Sorry I saw your message just now so replying late.

This is what I followed for my case.

As you see this thread was started in June 2015. I joined work in my OPT for an employer in July 2015 and then waited for change of my VISA status(H1B). Luckily I got my H1B picked up in Lottery for FY2017 during April 2016. After H1B came into effect from October 2016 I traveled to India to get my VISA stamping done on my new passport which I got it here from Indian consulate in the US.

All the best for your case.
