  • OPT Extension and Grace Period

    Hello,

I graduated on May 20th this year. I applied for my OPT start date as May 21 since I had a job offer ready in my hand. But due to some personal circumstances, I had to let go that offer and I am searching for jobs again. My OPT has already started and I need to show some employment before Aug 21, 2015. Now, I have the following questions:

    1. I have read that there is a total grace period of 90 days (60 days initially and 30 days during OPT extension). Since I did not use the first 60 days, can I have a grace period total of 90 days during my OPT extension?
    2. Is it ok to show some offer letter from some random employer and not really do any work? (My uncle has a consultancy and I can easily get an offer letter).
    3. How many employers can I change before I apply for the OPT extension?

It’s not grace period. You are not allowed to accrue more than 90 days of unemployment during your OPT period (120 days if you are counting the STEM OPT period as well).
You can technically change employers as many times as you want, as long as you are really working (and you will have documents/paystubs to prove it).

Applied for OPT a couple months ago, received the notice, and now waiting for updates. I graduated May 12th so my F-1 grace period is 60 days after that. If I don't get the EAD card by the end of the grace period, does a pending OPT application allow me to stay over the grace period or do I have to leave?
