  • Opt stem extension question

    Hello All,
I have a question regarding OPT STEM extension. I finished my Masters in Chemical Engineering and am currently in my OPT. I recently got a job offer from a big company. The position title is Civil Engineer, although my job responsibilities are Chemical Engineering related. Would this job title of Civil Engineer cause any issue while applying for STEM Extension? Thanks.

Technically yes your job should be directly related to the field of study but i have seen people from electrical and other branches doing IT . But u need to check abt the paperwork with those kind of people

It does not matter that much. Accept the offer from the big company without any fear. Your STEM will be approved in future. USCIS mentions as related field of study because previously in the past Students have worked in McDonald and Starbucks. Hence, to avoid that USCIS mentioned as related field of study. In case is they ask for it by sending RFE at the time of STEM, you can justify easily by writing a small letter.

It’s the job duties that should matter, not the job title. If USCIS has any questions, they can send a Request for Evidence. A letter from the employer describing your job duties should be sufficient.
