I20 Expires July 31st, Applied for OPT - Is it Risky to Travel?

If you have your i20 signed by university's international advisor that expires on July 31st, you are good to travel provided you come back to US before your i20 expires...

I am a graduate student at State Univ of NY. I recently extended my I-20 which was supposed to end on May 31, 2013 to July 31, 2013. I have only my masters project to be submitted. I am planning to travel internationally to India from last week of may till first week of July. Do you think I should travel since I have applied for OPT. Also I had another query if I submit my master's project in june first week and I come back after that would I have problem coming back even though my I-20 is till july 31.
