  • Lost visa/did not report change of address - can apply for STEM extension

Hi, I am intending to apply for the STEM extension soon, but I have 2 issues which I am afraid will jeopardize my application -

    1. I lost my passport and valid F1 visa inside it - I replaced my passport, but don't have a new visa stamp. I also didn't take a photocopy of the F1 visa (stupid, I know). Can I still apply without a photocopy of the F1 visa or must I get a new one?

    2. I changed residential address while on OPT, but didn't report it within 10 days. Should I report it now? Will this harm my chances of being approved for the stem extension?

Thanks for any help that anyone can give!!!

      1. The F-1 visa is not required. If you lost your passport, did you report it lost or stolen to the police? If USCIS requests a copy, you can submit the proof that it was stolen. Hopefully, you still have a copy of your most recent I-94 record.
      2. It shouldn’t affect your STEM extension, but you should report it to the school and to USCIS ASAP.

Thanks for the reply!! That's a great help.

        1. Yes, I reported it lost to the police, and I still have a copy of my I-94. So should I include the police report with my application? Or only if USCIS asks for it?

        2. Okay, I will report it ASAP.

You have 2 options. You can leave it out and just include the copy of the new passport and see if USCIS asks for it, OR you can include the police report with the explanation that your previous passport with the visa in it was reported stolen to the police. The benefit of including it now is to avoid any Request for Evidence delays. However, you are risking confusing the officer if not explained properly.

The f1 visa issue is far more serious than the address change . Usually at max address change not reported may result in rfe which will ask you to submit proof of employment during opt period to show you have not exceeded 90 days of unemployment
