Employed by a U.S company but working outside of U.S

Hi everyone,

I desperately need your help. I can't find anyone who knows the answer to my question, so i was hoping if someone could help me here.

I am being hired by a U.S company but they are sending me to Africa for about 10 months. Can I use my OPT while I am in Africa or the only way OPT works is if your working in the U.S? On the website it says students on OPT can travel overseas if it is for business purposes but it doesn't specify for how many days. I would really appreciate it if someone can help me with this.

Depends on Pay stubs and other legal obligations that you might have to face. If it is a golden opportunity don't miss it. Having a good career is important that living in US. The Best person to answer this would be you HR Department or a Immigration Lawyer... Good Luck...

As long as you are working for a US company and paid in the US and the business visit overseas is a temporary one, you should be good and your work is considered under US OPT. There is no limit on how much time you can be outside US while on OPT. The only condition is that you have to have a continuing job to return. I would be cautious if the job overlaps OPT renewal because USCIS doesn't like if the OPT card is mailed out of the US. Basically if you can come back to US for renewal and return after renewal it should be ok. The best person to Ask is your HR or Immigration atty.
