Post-Opt Start Date

Hello,

First of all I would say you guys are doing a great work helping out students with their questions.
It will be really helpful if I can get my question answered.Currently I am on my PRE-OPT which is gonna end on MAY 15th(friday).
My question is when can I keep my post-opt start date.

1.Can I have a gap between my pre-opt end date and my post-opt start date?
2.If yes,can I keep working in that gap?
3.Will I be legal in that time period if I have a gap?
4.Can I keep my post-opt start date on May 16th right away after my pre-opt ends?
