Hi all,
I am filing my income tax for 2014 using Windstar. For first half of 2014 I worked as a graduate assistant and I have a W2 for that. I used the income code 19 for this W2 since it states that - If your compensation was earned while you were here as a student or trainee, choose Code 19.
I graduated in Summer of 2014 started working for my current employer (joined them in July 2014). I have a W2 from them as well. I am wondering if I should use the same income code for submitting this W2 as well? Please advise
Here is the reference:
If you are from a tax treaty country, some or all of your wages might be exempt from tax under a Student/Trainee or Teacher/Researcher Article of the applicable treaty. In order to figure whether you might be exempt under a treaty article, you must provide the Income Code under which this income should have been reported on Form 1042-S. (This is the Income Code specified in IRS Publication 901, Table 2, column 2 for a treaty benefit for wages. Refer page 46 of the pdf - for India: income code 19)
If your compensation was earned while you were here as a student or trainee (even if it was earned for teaching or engaging in research), choose Code 19, but choose Code 17 if you are from Canada or Greece because they have no Student/Trainee Article.
