  • H1B visa

    Hi there,

I did Masters from Northwestern University and I am currently working on post opt and my employer is filing H1b this year for me. The H1b visa application will be filed based on employment. So, because it is a private university, will there be any problem in my H1b visa?

As far as university is concerned, i came to know that if the USCIS issues OPT and stem OPT, then there should not be any issues with H1b either. Is that correct?

Is there a list of for-profit universities online ?

    Thank you

Northwestern University is one of the country’s top universities and is not-for-profit. However, there is no issue in getting an H-1B if you do have a degree from a for-profit university (like Phoenix, for example). You just can’t be counted in the Master’s cap, only regular cap. You should be able to find the list of accredited not-for-profit schools here.

Thanks for your reply. Just to know, in case of a for-profit university, the candidate cannot apply for Masters cap. So the chances of the application being picked up in lottery are less likely in general quota than masters quota right? What if the student applies in general quota with premium processing? Does that increases the chances of application being picked up in any way.

Yes, that is correct. Those in the regular cap have a lower chance of getting picked in the lottery. The chances ARE NOT increased by filing Premium Processing – you’ll just know if you have been picked sooner.
