  • PhD to Masters

I am currently pursuing my PhD, but I am thinking about reverting back to masters and graduating with a masters degree and apply for OPT. I have all the course work needed for masters so I want to change my I-20 level of education to master so I can graduate and apply for OPT. Would this change in level of education pose any problem in my eligibility for OPT? How should I approach this? Anyone went through this before and how they dealt with it?

      Kindly provide more details

      1. Would this be your first Master's?
      2. If not, did you get OPT time during your First Master's?
      3. How long have you been in Phd program?
      4. Did you check with your DSO?

Once we have this info, we will be able to post this question on DesiOPT Facebook Wall. Hope to hear back from your.

If you went straight from Bachelor’s to PhD and now want to revert to Master’s, it shouldn’t have an effect on your ability to file for OPT. If this is your 2nd Master’s, however, you may have issues. You should speak with your DSO.

                1. Yes, first master's
                3. This is my second year
                4. My DSO is suggesting I need to wait one academic year before I apply for OPT once I revert back to master's. Is waiting a year necessary?
