  • OPT status if master's not complete when opt date begins

    Hello,

I am at the last semester of master's and doing research.
I am expecting the research to be completed by May 2015 and thus going to apply for OPT on February 2015 for a OPT start date of June 1st.
However if for any reason my research is not complete, I will not be graduating on May rather I would need to continue my research till August 2015.
If this happens then what will happen to the OPT I am applying for?
Will my OPT start even if I am still in college?
Or will I have to cancel the OPT and apply again for a date in August?
Or is there a way other than cancelling the OPT?

    Thanks

      You have 2 choices:
      1. When you realize your research may not be done and if your OPT is still pending, you can talk to your advisor and withdraw the OPT application. Your advisor will need to update your program end date in SEVIS. You can then apply again later.
      2. If the OPT is already approved by the time you realize you won’t graduate, you must utilize the OPT. Otherwise, you will begin accruing unemployment time. There is a max of 90 days of accrued unemployment time once OPT is issued. You must “work” at least 20 hours per week. Since you are allowed to work part-time while you are studying with proper authorization, this is allowed (see here for more information: http://www.ice.gov/doclib/sevis/pdf/...nce_042010.pdf).

i was at the same status,
                1. you can start work once you receive your OPT card
                2. yes
                3. you should discuss with the immigrant advisory at your school and convince him that you have finished all of your classes and only remaining the research, you can start work and finish your research on last semester
