Travelling in OPT Extension without OPT Extension Card

Hello,

I'm in OPT and my OPT extension will start from Feb 14th and I'm travelling to India on Feb 18th and returning on March 28th. My application was received by USCIS on Dec 22nd and it's still in initial review. I have updated i20, Employment letter.
How safe is to come back without OPT card?

You CANNOT travel while your STEM OPT extension is pending if your current OPT has expired. In order to travel, your current OPT must still be current or your STEM OPT must already be approved. If your OPT card has expired, you need to wait until the STEM OPT is approved. See page 28: http://www.ice.gov/doclib/sevis/pdf/...nce_042010.pdf.

Not safe. How can you assume that your extension starts on Feb 14 when it is still under review? Nonsense.

You cannot travel without the EAD card, and as far as I know your application automatically gets canceled if you travel outside US , when your Extension is pending decision, because once you leave your I94 changes. Moreover you will be asked to show your EAD at the port of entry. So if you travel it will be at your own risk.

Hello im exactly in your situation. .you may go but its not advised.. if you think you have a friend who can post your card to india and if you can enter usa with your card in hand you should be okay. . However there always a substantial risk depending on port of entry and immigration officer you might run into.. so beware and wait til you have card before going to India
