  • Working Abroad on OPT

    Hi guys

I am working as an engineer under my OPT (EAD CARD) at a USA based company. However my employer requires me to work from abroad (India). So, I would like to know if can do that on my OPT . Also, what would the documents required to carry in if I ever enter USA ?

Hi Bhuvan! I have an exactly opposite case. I want to work from India. I'm just curious, does you employer have plans to get you back to the US? Is your move temporary or permanent? How does it affect your pay and stuff? Sorry for tonnes of questions.

Why do you need to work abroad? Is it for a special project there, or is it because they are trying to pay you less? Any time spent abroad is counted towards your unemployment limit on OPT unless you are traveling for employment purposes (http://www.ice.gov/doclib/sevis/pdf/...nce_042010.pdf, see page 17, 7.1.8). However, traveling for employment purposes is different than being stationed abroad. By working and living abroad, you may lose your OPT and you may not be allowed to come back to the U.S. on F-1 visa.
When traveling, you usually have to have an endorsed I-20 which was signed by the school within last 180 days, your EAD card, your visa and your job letter.

Yes, you can travel for work. Just make sure you get a letter from your employer stating that you currently work for them and will be working when you come back. This employer should be the same as the one with the ISO of your university. Also carry all your documents - EAD, I-20 etc. A proof of pay stubs of your work with that employer could also help.

@Abhinav Goel Under OPT you are allowed to work as an unpaid intern or a contractor, right ? Does this work even while travelling abroad ?

Working abroad usually requires you to know languages and documents to apply there. If you good on documents, you should only care about language. There are lots of different service, for example. in Poland you can go with https://buki.org.pl/korepetycje/jezyk-angielski/ to learn it.
