  • Pre completion and Post completion OPT confusion! Please help!

Hello guys, thanks for helping everyone with queries.

I am planning my graduation in May 2015 and I am done with all my course work except project which I will be doing next semester.

    1. So, if I take pre-completion OPT starting from March 2015, Can I work 40 hours?

    2. If I take pre-completion OPT, am I eligible for OPT extension?

    Help would be appreciated!

While school is in session, you’re only allowed to work 20 hours a week. You must ask your DSO if you must abide by this rule since you still need to complete course requirements. You are still eligible for STEM extension.

In short pre completion opt accounts when you are in school, though a normal student can apply for it and it is more advantageous to those who's thesis or project may be still pending and willing to work can apply for it and this have some restrictions 1) is not eligible for opt extension even though you come under stem group and 2) will be eligible to work only for 20 hours when school is in session and can work full time hours when school is in vacation in brief pre opt is school oriented before you graduate from school and finally 3) last but not the least when you did not use your pre opt completely you can apply for post opt but in this case your general opt months will be reduced 2 months proportionally of every month of part time pre opt you worked in brief for every student in general applying for post completion opt will get 12 months of post completion opt period but when you work on pre opt suppose I took pre opt for 12 months where I am wiling to work for part time where my work should be completed before the I graduate but if I graduate early by 4 months I am eligible to apply post completion opt for 2 months and please l know comment is bit big but I shared my knowledge please be patient and let me know if I am wrong thank you
