  • Social Security Taxes getting deducted from my paychecks.

    Hello,

I am working full time for a startup on F1-OPT from last 2 months. My paychecks show deduction of social security and medicare taxes where it should not be as I am on F1 visa. I asked my employer but he is unaware of these things .I know I can get these refund by form 535.
My question is what could have wrong at first place as they got deducted?
Could it from my side or my employer ?
In either case what could be the next steps to correct these so that they wont get deducted?

    Thanks a lot.

Retropay can be run in some instances by your employer. Check it with your employer.

I'm glade someone ask this question, I would like to add on to it if anyone know the answer. What if you have been in US for over 5 years, and currently on opt? Many thanks:-)

Initially they deducted from my paycheck also. Then I informed it payroll and after getting informed about the rule, they refunded it.

It happened to me too. Just tell your employer that you are a opt student and he or she needs to talk to their accountant. And you will receive your refund in next coming paycheck. That's what I did and I got all beck in one check.
