  • Travelling India after applying for OPT

    Hi friends,

I am graduating in December 2014 and applied for OPT. My i20 expires by December 15, 2014. I am planning to travel India after my graduation. I have an offer letter in my hand but I will not be receiving OPT card by that time.

What are the documents I need to carry if I plan to travel after my graduation ???

Would it be a problem at port of entry, immgiration check ???

You must travel with the I-765 receipt notice in addition to endorsed/signed I-20, valid visa and offer letter.
You may encounter an issue at the POE if you happen to meet an officer who doesn’t know that you can travel while your OPT application is pending. There is an FAQ from ICE that is addressed here under the question, “Can I reenter if my request for OPT is pending?”. You might want to print it out and carry it with you.
Also, it advises that if your OPT is approved while you’re gone, you need it to reenter. You should have someone you trust in the U.S. who can mail the OPT card to you if it gets approved while you’re away (be sure to continue checking your case status online while you’re in India- https://egov.uscis.gov/casestatus/landing.do).
