  • 20 days left no OPT Extension

    Hi,

My girlfriend recently checked her Opt extension status online and it shows that her application is suspended since she has not paid for her biometrics. She is on her F1 visa and she had done her biometrics in India. Could you please advise? I know for OPT extension we dont need to do biometrics again. We called USCIS and they say that her biometrics has expired and that she needs to re do it (which is just weird). They say that they have sent a letter (which we have yet to receive) and are really rigid to discuss anything till we get the letter.

Her OPT expires on November 20th and we had sent the application on August 22nd.

Now its just 20 days remaining for her OPT to expire and it was not our fault. USCIS notified us of the suspended application on October 24th! What are our options? We are worried! Please help. Please advise.

If they have sent the Biometrics notice on October 24th, your friend should have received it already. If she doesn’t receive it this week, make sure she calls USCIS back to tell them she has not received it.

Please note that your friend is authorized to continue working for up to 180 days after her OPT expires if a STEM extension is pending (http://www.ice.gov/sevis/practical-training).

Bio metrics is usually for people who had e-filed their extension applications. I had mine done just recently. Its not anything out of the ordinary and just a part of your stem extension process. I had my appointment from USICS after my extension had started, so I think its okay as you have sent all the required documents to USCIS "before" your OPT ends. The letter is sent on the address that is mentioned in the extension application. Not sure if I answered your question, but hope this helps.
