  • MS to Phd extension

I am a Master's student in Electrical Engineering. My MS will end by December 2015, I am planning to pursue my PhD after it preferably from other university in Fall 2016. My F1 visa is of 5 years of which I will use 2 years for my MS and around 6 months after it , so I would be left with 2.5 years in my visa. Could you please give suggestion to solve my problem?

The Visa has nothing to do with your ability to study in the U.S. in F-1 status. The Visa allows entry into the U.S. in a certain status. Once you are here in F-1 status, you will remain in status as long as you have a valid I-20, regardless of the fact that your visa may expire. If you are still in F-1 status after you visa expires and you need to travel, you will just need to get a new visa before your return to the U.S. Here is a good article about the “visa status”: http://www.visapro.com/Immigration-Articles/?a=176&z=64.
