  • Chemical Engineering to Business Analyst Job - OPT

    Hi,

I completed my PhD in Chemical Engineering and want to join the corporate world in a core business role. Will it be an issue with my OPT or STEM extension if I get a job as a financial analyst/pricing analyst/strategy consultant in a retail company like Target, Walmart, Giant Eagle? Are these jobs not directly related to my field? I will be using my knowledge of statistics, optimization, data analysis, and analytical thinking - skills learned while doing PhD in chemical. Any help on this matter will be appreciated.

    Regards.

You should speak with your International Student Advisor. Your job must be “directly related” to your degree program. While no one is necessarily checking on you and where you’re working, you may be asked to justify the work experience later, for example, at a future visa interview. If your Student Advisor thinks it’s okay, I would get a letter from the advisor which explains why he or she thinks the two are related. At least this way, you’re protected.
