  • Travelling outside the US on OPT

I recently graduated with a Masters and my OPT has been approved on Sep 9, 2014. My academic advisor is thinking of hiring me on a part time basis in his lab as a research assistant, however it all depends on the availability of his funds. So is volunteering considered to initiate the OPT? the job (or volunteering) should start by Sep 25th.
Also, I am planning to visit India from Dec 6 - Jan 20 (45 days). During that period, I will not get paid as the research assistant position is going to be an hourly position. Will this time be counted under the 90 days unemployment that can be accrued on an aggregate?
Will there be any problem at the port of entry?

    Thank you.
