  • OPT stem extension

Hi, I have applied for my OPT stem extension this month. I was told that I was supposed to submit my application within 30 days from the date of I20 issurance. My I20 was issued on April 24 and unfortunately I sent my package on May 22nd through USPS priority mail. I tracked my package and found that it got delivered on May 23rd which is the 29th day from the date my I20 was issued. So, will they consider the day it was delivered to the USCIS office or the date they opened my case? It would be great if you can answer this for me. I know they will be sending me a receipt that will the date my case was received. Will this date be the same date the package was delivered? Also, if that is not the case, can I cancel my application and reapply again? My current Opt is ending on Aug 27th.

Hi I dont think it is a big problem. You can apply as early as 120 days before your OPT expires. You are within the time frame set by USCIS.

The 30 day rule is definitely there regarding from date of issuance of I 20. What date they consider, it will probably be clear only when yu receive the receipt and are able to check your status online.

30 day rule is counted from the day your I797C is generated. The notice calls out the date and that should be be within 30 days.

They are talking about the I-20 requesting OPT should reach USCIS with the OPT packet within 30 days of issuance and not about when to apply for OPT prior to or after graduation.

ok guys. we know that OPT ext can be applied as early as 120 days. We are talking about the I-20. Once the Stem ext I 20 is issued...the i20 is valid only for a month after the issuance date and has to reach USCIS before expiry. What if it soes not reach? I got an RFE. It states That i need to send a Legible and clear copy of my current SEVIS form I20. and they opened my packet on April 9th which 34 days from my issuance date...so will i have to apply for a new stem ext i20 from international services or do I send a copy of the same I20(which my international services suggests
