  • Job different from your course study on OPT

    Hi,

I am a graduate in Mechanical Engineering and have recently applied for my OPT. Can I being a mechanical engineer work somewhere which is not completely related to my work field on OPT? For eg. Engineering design is a part of mechanical engineering, we don't study it in very much detail but still a part of engineering. So can I work in a company which completely deal with designing and not proper mechanical engineering stuff? The same goes for marketing! I had just read about it in brief during my under-grad and want to try my hands in marketing as a full-time. Would it be illegal to engage in stuff like this on OPT?

    Thanks

          1) You are good to work as a design engineer in a company whose main business is performing design/analysis. Engineering designs are mostly performed by Mechanical Engineers and you are eligible for that. Engineering design requires Mechanical Engineers, where as just generating engineering drawings doesn't require one, because it's the function of the drafter. I hope you are only talking about engineering design
          2) marketing is no where related to even Engineering. It may be the task for engineering managers, not the engineers. If you gonna work on OPT, better don't do such jobs.

            1. Mechanical engineering is a vast discipline and design is one of a majors in it. I dont underatand your concern as to why would that be an isuue.
            2. Marketing, on the other hand, is completely different case.
