How Long can I be out of USA legally when I am on OPT.

Hi,
I am on OPT and I am working as a part time employee with my professor. I have some family emergency and left USA. I thought I can be back with in 2 weeks and requested my professor and he agreed for the vacation. But now I feel like it might take a couple of months to reenter back So My question is
1) If my professor agrees for work from home can I do that.
2) How long can I be out of country? I mean how many months can I be out of country?
