  • OPT Start Date

    Hello,

I am graduating in this June and my course end date is June 29, 2014. I am going to apply for OPT now. I wanted to know what OPT start date can i mention on the application form. Some people say that the OPT start date should be within 60 days from the course end date. However, i came to know from one of my friends that the OPT start date can be within 90 days from the course end date.

    Can you please clarify?

You can apply for OPT 60 days prior to your scheduled graduation and within 60 days after your graduation. Your start date has to be within 60 days after graduation. The 90 days is the unemployment rule. if you are unemployed for more than 90 days (cumulative) your SEVIS is considered to be complete and you need to leave the country in next 60 days.

If you apply for OPT STEM Ext with more than 90 days unemployment, you are ineligible for the same and it may be rejected.

Very nicely explained! Not that I didn't know this, but I am applauding your writing here.
Hard to believe people on the verge of graduation and already having spent 2 years in the US have to ask questions on such basic stuff.

When does the 90 day unemployment count starts? After graduation date or OPT start date?
