  • STEM and travel

    Hi all
I will be travelling to India in june during my stem opt period. I don't have a valid visa.
Does anyone have any recent experience with visa interviews for F1?
Also typically how long does the stem extension takes?

Please elaborate your question as this will help us understand your situation and provide suggestions
    - What's your current Situation?
    - When did you apply for STEM?
    - Which service center?
-Where do you plan to go for Visa?
Once we hear from you, we will be able to better assist you. Thanks-DesiOPT Team

      Thanks for the follow up.

Currently, I am working full-time on my OPT that expires end-may. My DSO will send me my STEM I-20 and I will apply for STEM extension once I receive it ( possible early next week). MY application will be for Vermont Service center. I plan to go to Chennai consulate for my visa since my family is there and I am making a family visit trip.

This might not be a recent experience. I got the visa renewal stamping at Hyderabad Consulate last year while I'm on OPT with expired F1 visa. But it should'nt be different for Chennai.

Coming to Visa stamping experience, its pretty much same as the interview you attended first time before coming to US. You have to go through the same process as applying a new visa. Like,
              1. Fill out the DS-160 form
              2. Pay visa fee at Axis bank
              3. Schedule two appointments: one for Bio-metric and one for visa interview.

Documents need to carry: All I-20's (admission, CPT, OPT, STEM OPT), Passport with expired visa stamp, EAD card(s) employment offer letter.
To be on safe side also carry recent pay stubs, all certificates (BS and MS), letter from employer stating you are still working for them.

              All the best!

As a follow up question -- what if I decide to travel before I receive my STEM extension approval? My current EAD is valid until May 31 2014 and I do not have a valid visa. I have a valid STEM I-20.
